HISTORY

Three community leaders who made a strong positive impact on the Broadway Fillmore neighborhood were recognized at a mural unveiling on Thursday, April 30 at Eugene V. Debs Hall, 483 Peckham Street. Art Resource – the organization helping to drive the effort – unveiled the mural that depicts the images of Robert J. Sienkiewicz, Erie County Legislator Greg Olma, and Yuri Hreshchyshyn. Before their passing, all within the last year, these community activists served their community in ways that helped to bolster fundamental reform in areas such as fair housing, civic engagement, and cultural preservation. The Buffalo-based artist behind the creation of the mural is MJ Myers, whose work explores neighborhood identity, memory, and public space through large-scale, community-centered installations, according to Art Resource. The mural – considered a point of reflection, which honors the lives of the three community vanguards – has been installed on the Clark Street exterior wall of Eugene V. Debs Hall. Art Resource co-director Christopher Kameck managed the project, by steering the direction of the mural and all that it represents. To that end, Kameck worked alongside community partners, who helped to further create the vision for the mural. A public unveiling took place this past Thursday, April 30, 2026. The mural was made possible through a New York State grant secured by Assembly member Pat Burke, in partnership with Art Services Inc. of Western New York, and executed by Buffalo artist, MJ Myers. Following the unveiling, attendees were invited inside Eugene V. Debs Hall for a community reception with food, refreshments, and conversation. (Buffalo Rising)

Donate to “Warm Hearts” Campaign
For the past 11 years the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) has successfully organized the “Warm Hearts” Campaign. This year, we will continue the tradition to cheer up the hearts of the children in Ukraine. Thanks to you, every child has felt the magic of Christmas, and every child who received these backpacks warmed our hearts with their smile. It is our goal to morally support and help the children in Ukraine during the Christmas holidays. These backpacks are being sent to orphans and children whose parents are currently fighting the war in the ranks of the Armed Forces. We are asking our Buffalo Hromada to help CYM Buffalo continue with this project and consider donating to this worthwhile campaign.
Please contact Ann S. (716) 316-1051 by October 19th if you wish to help. We will be shipping the backpacks to Ukraine by October 27th, so they will be received in time for Christmas.

St. Nicholas, Sviatyj Mykolaj, comes to Ukraine on December 19th by the Orthodox Julian calendar. It is a happy day with visiting and sleigh rides. Schools have plays telling Nicholas stories and the Saint visits local churches. Dressed as a Byzantine bishop, the good saint is often accompanied by angels. He quizzes children on their catechism before giving gifts. St. Nicholas Day is the main day for gift-giving, though gifts are also becoming associated with Christmas Day. Today many Ukrainian churches have St. Nicholas celebrations to help children understand that the holy man Nicholas came long before Santa Claus.
St. Nicholas history in Ukraine goes back to the 10th and 11th centuries. In churches, his icons are prominently placed on the iconostas, usually next to Jesus, the Mother of God, or the patron saint of the church. His icons were found also in nearly every home. In the mountains of western Ukraine where the Hutzels named the four seasons of the year after saints, winter honors St. Nicholas.
Ukrainians have Saint Nicholas as the patron saint of children since olden days. He makes us believe our most cherished dreams will come true one day, endows our hearts with kind feelings and inspires us to do good.
This bright and joyful holiday is the first holiday coming to us as a good winter fairy-tale announcing the approaching of Christmas and New Year. It gives us confidence that our lifelong dreams will come true, it also gives us hope and love, and inspires us to good deeds and mercy towards others, Ukrainians like Saint Nicholas as a wise patron and mentor always helping all kind-hearted people.
Western New York is full of interesting places to visit and be amazed.
