Spaghetti Dinner at St. Nicholas Church Hall
The League of Ukrainian Catholics, Niagara Frontier Council, is attempting to restart the Msgr. Paul Iwachiw Scholarship for the next school year. We are in the process of revising the scholarship guidelines and requirements.
To raise funds for this scholarship, the Council is sponsoring a "Spaghetti Dinner"
Sunday, May 31, 2009 from 11:30AM-2:00PM at St. Nicholas Church Hall.
The cost of the dinner is $10.00.
Dinner includes, bread, salad, spaghetti, meatballs, dessert & coffee.
Fundraiser for Kasiyan's Family.
What a wonderful fundraiser it was! Hundreds of people came to support the Kasiyan family in their time of need. The money raised will help them pay medical bills for their mother and grandmother, Mrs. Jaroslava Kasian, who is in the hospital awaiting surgery.
Everyone that came had a great time. For $15 admission they enjoyed a delicious dinner with borshch, cabbage rolls (holubtsi), pyrohy, salad with condiments and home-made cakes with coffee.
Many people did not leave empty handed. Some took home winning raffle baskets, some Ukrainian souvenirs, some cakes, and one woman won a brand new microwave.
Rev. Kasiyan and his family thanked everyone that made this fundraiser possible: O. Melenchuk, I. Sypniak, and O. Shutka for cooking delicious Ukrainian food; H. Nazarevych, H. Serediuk, O. Bandriwsky, O. Olenych, S. Kenn and N. Savka for organization, advertising, selling tickets and everyone who helped before and during the dinner. Special thanks to those people who donated homemade cakes, baskets and other items for raffle, and all those who gave special monetary donations!
For a lot of Ukrainians it was a great time to meet old friends and share news of the Ukrainian community (hromada) in Buffalo and Western New York. Everybody wished Mrs. Jaroslava Kasiyan to get well soon and God's blessings of health and happiness.
$$$ Monetary donations are still being accepted at: Ukrainian Home Dnipro Federal Credit Union at 562 Genesee St. Buffalo, NY 14204, Phone 847-6655 |
St. John The Baptist Church Bazaar was a Success.
The St. John the Baptist parish sponsored an annual fundraising "Save for the Holidays" Easter Bazaar on April 4, 2009 at the Parish hall. Despite the slightly inclement weather, the parishioners and supporters from nearby cities and towns came to support this year's event.
Young and old were attracted and captivated by various raffles, theme baskets, ethnic food and baked goods, Ukrainian Easter Eggs, "Trash and Treasures," and local vendors with diverse products. Everyone had an opportunity to win numerous prices.
In addition, the quests tried and enjoyed delicious ethnic food, such as holybci, pyrohy, Easter paska, and pastries.
The parishioners and quests spent an afternoon in a spirit of approaching Easter season with a smile and nobody left empty-handed.
The Easter Bazaar Committee and everyone who gave a helping hand before, during and after the Easter Bazaar deserve giant thanks. The fundraising event was a huge success. Thanks everyone who came to support the St. John the Baptist "Save for the Holidays" Easter Bazaar.

A documentary film "A Kingdom Reborn: Treasures from Ukrainian Galicia" was about the art and architectural treasures of Lviv
and Western Ukraine. It
presented Lviv and its cityscape, and the region's myths, legends and artistic achievements, as constantly shifting arenas where diverse and complex identities evolved and now face specific challenges in the 21st century. It was produced by by Dani Stodilka from Toronto and was sponsored by Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Br. 97. on Saturday, March 21. Everyone that came to watch a movie learned something new about Halychuna and it's history, and went home once again proud to be Ukrainian.

While American Holiday Season is ending, Ukrainian Holiday Season is just starting. It starts with UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS on January 7th. For the Ukrainian people Christmas is the most important family holiday of the whole year. It is celebrated solemnly, as well as merrily, according to ancient customs that have come down through the ages and are still observed today. Ukrainian Christmas festivities begin on Christmas Eve, January 6th and end on the Feast of the Epiphany by old Julian Calendar.
The Christmas Eve Supper or Sviata Vecheria (Holy Supper) brings the family together to partake in special foods and begin the holiday with many customs and traditions, which reach back to antiquity. The rituals of the Christmas Eve are dedicated to God, to the welfare of the family, and to the remembrance of the ancestors. With the appearance of the first star which is believed to be the Star of Bethlehem, the family gathers to begin supper.
READ MORE

Happy Holidays Season: Celebrating Two Christmases
Adjusting to life in my adopting country and culture takes time and patience. On one hand it's hard. On opposite, it's more fun, especially when it comes to celebrating religious holidays. Because most of the Christian holidays around the world have the same meaning, but continue to be celebrated according to two calendars Julian and Gregorian, I've found December and January are the busiest months with marks on my personal calendar. They combine holidays celebrated in both countries with which I have connections-Ukraine and the USA .
December 19 - St. Nicholas, Sviatyij Mykolai Day. The popular traditional gift giving day in Ukraine According to cultural rituals, children and adults receive presents which they "discover" under their pillows on early morning and the person named Nicholas-Mykola receives special treatment on this day. Schools have plays telling Nicholas stories and the saint visits local youth organizations. He quizzes children on their catechism before giving gifts. It's similar to the American Christmas when people exchange presents.
December 24-26 - Christmas Eve and Day. READ MORE

The Annual Western New York Ukrainian Festival was celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day on the beautiful grounds of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church at 3275 Elmwood Avenue in Kenmore. This year's Festival, celebrated on Sunday, September 7, 2008, from noon to 8 pm, was attended by almost a thousand people. Many Americans, and people of other nationalities, joined with members of the local Ukrainian-American community to enjoy an afternoon of friendship and a love of Ukrainian food, music and traditions.
The Ukrainian Dance Group "Dunai" from Rochester, came with a busload of very talented young dancers that entertained the applauding spectators.
In addition to the cultural program on the stage of the huge Banquet Hall, there was also a live concert performed outside by a musical ensemble from Rochester.
Several local politicians congratulated the Ukrainian Festival, including heavyweight boxer Joe Mesi, candidate for NY Senate. Many Ukrainian songs were performed on stage by the guitar duet of little Stefan Kuklich, (Father Kuklich's 6 year old son), and Myron Deputat, choir master and band leader of "Those Idiots".
There was an abundance of pyrohy (pierogi), holubtsi (cabbage rolls), kielbasa with sour kraut, chicken barbeque, and a lot of home made sweets with coffee. Hundreds of people enjoyed their meals at the festival, and took some home too.
